Last night, my Mom had all the grandkids over for the annual decorating of the Christmas tree at Nana and Papa’s house. Every year since Mack was old enough to hang an ornament, this had been a tradition.
Of course, it was only Mack for a long time, so now it is more fun, with three more girlies added to the mix.
Mack even drove down from Yellow State, to be a part of the festivities. Quite possibly the last time, depending on what ends up happening with school. A little bitter-sweet for my Mom.
As I was chatting with my Mom this morning, she was telling me how cute Mea and her cousin S were last night. Each ornament that they pulled out of the box was oohed and aahed over, as they were such beautiful “gordaments.”
“Gordaments” has been what Mea has been calling all of the ornaments. It is cracking me up. I have made her repeat ORN, A, MENT over and over, but when she is talking it is still coming out as “gordaments.” I think I am just calling them that from now on. Mack used to call gravy, graybit, and it still has stuck all these years, have a feeling gordament will be too.
So, the first year that Mea was home, she was almost eighteen months old at Christmas time, which means that my youngest niece, S, was two and a half. The kids were all over the place, obviously Mack and my oldest niece, P, were doing the majority of the decorating. Mea was just mostly playing. S was “helping” the way that a 2 1/2 year-old would, which is not very much.
Anyway, they are doing their thing. Hanging stuff, setting out the sit around things, look over, and my youngest niece S is bleeding from the mouth. It took them a while to figure out what she had done, as everyone was panicking.
The girl had taken a bite out of a glass ball ornament.
Like an apple.
Shattered when her little teeth took the chomp out of it.
Thankfully, the girl didn’t actually swallow any glass. Thankfully, it was just a little scratch.
Made a memory for everyone that is revisited every single year on trimming the tree day.
Last night, my Mom said, “Now S, don’t take bites out of any ornaments…” Mom said she looked at her like she was crazy. Mom, Dad and Mack got a pretty good chuckle out of it.
